Yesterday, The National Association of ISPs (ANISP) launched a trial of the Romanian National Internet Exchange (RoNIX), which will serve as a central hub to increase the interconnection among Romanian internet users.

ANISP hopes that its US$100,000 (E109,853) project will become the framework for a future information society in Romania. People using the RoNIX will be able to access other networks at higher speeds that could reach up to 100 Mbps.

The hub will also contribute to the development of e-commerce, i-banking, and databases. ISPs will also benefit since anyone trying to connect to a Romanian site will have to make the connection through RoNIX.

Banking networks and corporate intranets will also be able to link to this central node. RoNIX will receive its financing via monthly member fees in accordance with leased bandwidths.
